How Rockstar's Crunch Reckoning Shaped GTA 6's Development

Published Covers GTA6DB Staff2 min read

Between a 2018 investigation into Rockstar's crunch culture and a 2020 follow-up, the reporting suggested GTA 6 was being built to a deliberately different plan.

In October 2018, ahead of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser told Vulture that "we were working 100-hour weeks." The backlash was immediate, and Houser clarified to Variety within a day that the figure described the four-person senior writing team for about three weeks, and that Rockstar "would never expect" others to work that way.

Days later, Jason Schreier published "Inside Rockstar Games' Culture Of Crunch" at Kotaku, drawing on 77 people — 34 current and 43 former employees. It documented sustained overtime spanning months or years, concentrated in QA and at the New York headquarters, and reported that management's framing of crunch as voluntary was contradicted by staff. One employee's line captured it: the company valued "not the bugs you fix but the hours you put in."

The follow-up is the one that matters for GTA VI. On April 15, 2020, Schreier reported that eighteen months on, Rockstar had made significant cultural changes — flexitime, management training, anonymous employee surveys, voluntary rather than mandatory overtime at time-and-a-half. Rockstar publishing head Jennifer Kolbe wrote to staff that the studio had "taken conscious steps to improve our approach to developing games in order to reduce the need for overtime."

The same report said the next Grand Theft Auto was early in development, and that the plan was to start with a "moderately sized release" — still large by any normal standard — and expand it with updates over time, explicitly as a way of avoiding another death march.

Treat that last part carefully. It is reporting on internal plans from 2020, not an announcement, and Rockstar has never confirmed such a strategy on the record. Six years and two delays later, whether it survived contact with production is a question the finished game will answer and nobody else can.
