Rockstar Confirms GTA 6 Is in Development — Buried in a Community Update

Published Covers GTA6DB Staff2 min read

The first official acknowledgement that a new Grand Theft Auto existed was one sentence inside a post about something else entirely — and it never said the words 'GTA 6'.

The confirmation everyone had waited nearly a decade for arrived without a headline. On February 4, 2022, Rockstar published a routine Newswire post — a Grand Theft Auto Community Update, mostly concerned with The Contract, and with GTA V and GTA Online arriving on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S that March. The news sat at the very bottom, under a heading reading simply "What's Next."

"With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series," it began — an unusually direct acknowledgement, for Rockstar, that the silence had become the story. Then: "With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway."

What it did not say is as instructive as what it did. No title. No platforms. No setting, no protagonists, no window. Rockstar did not use the string 'Grand Theft Auto VI' or 'GTA 6' anywhere in the post — only "the next entry in the series." The official name would not be used until the trailer arrived twenty-two months later.

One detail is worth pinning down, because coverage has blurred it ever since. The Newswire post says development is "well underway." The accompanying post on Rockstar's own Twitter account dropped the intensifier: "active development for the next entry in the series is underway." Both are official; outlets quoted them interchangeably. Where you see the phrase attributed one way or the other, both are defensible — they are two Rockstar statements published the same day.

Take-Two's earnings call three days later, on February 7, added precisely nothing. Management did not expand on the unannounced game at all. That silence set the pattern for the rest of the year: the February sentence was the ceiling of what the company would say about GTA 6 in 2022, and everything else that year came from outside the building.
