Why GTA 6 Is Console-First — and What That Means for a PC Date
Rockstar has never announced a PC version of GTA 6. A former Rockstar producer has explained the reasoning behind the studio’s console-first pattern — and the two previous games give the only numbers worth quoting.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. That is the whole confirmed platform list. Rockstar has never announced a PC version, given a PC window, or acknowledged one exists — which is why every "GTA 6 PC system requirements" table in circulation is invented, a point we cover separately.
What is new is an explanation of the pattern, from someone who worked inside it.
John Ricchio, a producer at Rockstar between 2003 and 2014 with credits including Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3 and Grand Theft Auto V, described the studio’s reasoning in interview remarks reported in mid-July 2026. His account is about engineering economics rather than platform politics: consoles are fixed hardware, and building for a known target first is simply cheaper than building for an unbounded set of PC configurations and then scaling down.
His framing was that "shrinking is a lot harder than extending" — it is far more difficult to claw back performance from a game built without constraints than it is to spend headroom you discover later. Start on the console, hit the target, and the PC version becomes a question of what to do with the extra room.
Two caveats matter and both are ours, not his. Ricchio left Rockstar in 2014, eight years before GTA 6 was even confirmed to exist. He has no knowledge of this game’s plans and did not claim any. What he offered was an ex-employee’s read on how the studio has historically worked, which is useful context and is not a source on GTA 6’s schedule.
For the schedule, the only evidence worth anything is what Rockstar has actually done before. Grand Theft Auto V reached consoles in September 2013 and PC in April 2015 — roughly eighteen months. Red Dead Redemption 2 reached consoles in October 2018 and PC in November 2019 — roughly thirteen. Applied to a November 2026 console launch, that history points somewhere in late 2027 to early 2028.
That is an extrapolation from two data points, not a forecast, and we are labelling it as one. Rockstar has committed to nothing. If a PC version is announced we will cover the announcement; until then the honest answer to "when is GTA 6 on PC" is that nobody outside Rockstar knows, and the people publishing dates are guessing from the same two games you can look up yourself.
