Grand Theft Auto VI Revealed: Vice City, Leonida, and a 2025 Window

Published Covers GTA6DB Staff1 min read

Ninety-one seconds, a Tom Petty song, and the first official use of the name. Here is precisely what the reveal confirmed — and what it did not.

Take-Two's press release carried the headline that ended a decade of speculation: "Rockstar Games Announces Grand Theft Auto VI, Coming 2025." It was the first official use of the title.

What the announcement confirmed, in its own words: the game "heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond." Platforms: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Window: 2025. No PC version was announced — and none has been announced since. Sam Houser, quoted in the release, said GTA VI "continues our efforts to push the limits of what's possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences."

The trailer itself ran 1:31, scored to Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road," and introduced Lucia — named in Rockstar's December 2023 materials, and the first female lead in a mainline Grand Theft Auto.

Now the part that matters, because almost every retrospective gets it wrong. The press release names no protagonists at all. The male lead's name, Jason, was not established as official in December 2023 — Rockstar confirmed the full name Jason Duval only with Trailer 2, seventeen months later. Lucia's surname, Caminos, likewise came later.

And "Bonnie and Clyde" is not Rockstar's phrase. It comes from Jason Schreier's July 2022 Bloomberg reporting, which described a duo inspired by the pair; when the trailer showed Lucia and Jason together, outlets reached for the shorthand and it stuck. Rockstar has never used it. Neither is the modern-day setting an official statement — it is a sound inference from the footage's smartphones and social feeds, but an inference all the same.

We date this entry December 5 because that is the date on Rockstar's own Newswire post. The trailer itself went public the previous evening. Both dates are defensible; they describe different events.
