Sam Houser Announces the First GTA 6 Trailer — November 8, 2023
A short statement signed by Rockstar's founder confirmed a December trailer. It never used the words 'Grand Theft Auto VI'.
On November 8, 2023, Rockstar posted a statement signed by founder Sam Houser: "We are very excited to let you know that in early December, we will release the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto. We look forward to many more years of sharing these experiences with all of you." The statement noted that the following month would mark Rockstar's 25th anniversary.
Read it again and notice what is missing. No title. No date beyond "early December." No footage, no artwork, no platforms. The words "Grand Theft Auto VI" and "GTA 6" appear nowhere — the official title would not be used until the trailer itself arrived. Twenty-one months after confirming the game existed, Rockstar's second public statement about it was three sentences long.
The restraint was the strategy. Rockstar has never run a conventional marketing campaign for a Grand Theft Auto game, and the pattern held: a small number of short, plain announcements, each of which becomes the biggest gaming story of its week without any assistance.
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier had reported earlier that day that an announcement was imminent with a trailer to follow the next month — reporting that preceded Rockstar's post rather than responding to it. Take-Two's share price rose on the news.
Rockstar followed up on December 1 with key art setting the premiere: Trailer 1, Tuesday December 5, 9AM ET. It did not go to plan.
