Rockstar: GTA 6 Launches With No Microtransactions and No Generative AI

Asked directly during a studio visit, Rockstar North's Rob Nelson said GTA VI has no monetisation at launch and no generative AI. Here is what that covers — and what it does not.

Two of the most-asked questions about Grand Theft Auto VI got short answers at the end of August. During a preview visit to Rockstar North in Edinburgh, the hosts of the Kinda Funny podcast asked co-studio head Rob Nelson whether the game has microtransactions and whether it uses generative AI. His answer to both was no.

No monetisation at launch

Nelson said there is no monetisation in the game when it launches on November 19. For a series whose online mode made GTA V one of the most profitable entertainment products ever released, that is a meaningful statement about the single-player game.

No generative AI

Asked point blank, Nelson said the game contains none. Rockstar's interviews around the Extended Look leaned the same way, stressing the hand-made work behind the game.

What it does not cover

The answer was about launch. Rockstar has not said whether paid content arrives later, and has said nothing about how a future online mode will be funded. Take-Two continues to describe GTA VI as a single-player title, and no online mode has been dated.

The rating question

The ESRB listing, published in October, includes the interactive element “In-Game Purchases”. That label is applied to any game where digital content can be bought, including later add-ons, so it does not contradict Nelson; but it does mean the door is open, and Rockstar has not explained what the label covers.
