Take-Two Narrows GTA 6 to Fall 2025 — the Window That Did Not Hold

Published Covers GTA6DB Staff1 min read

In a year with no trailer and no Rockstar announcement, the only real GTA 6 news came from an earnings release — and it turned out to be wrong by more than a year.

Calendar 2024 produced no GTA VI trailer, no screenshots, and not a single Rockstar Newswire post about the game. Every on-record data point that year came through Take-Two's financial machinery. The important one landed on May 16.

In its Q4 and full-year FY2024 results, Take-Two wrote: "Our outlook reflects a narrowing of Rockstar Games' previously established window of Calendar 2025 to Fall of Calendar 2025 for Grand Theft Auto VI." CFO Lainie Goldstein restated it on the call. The product pipeline table was updated to match, listing PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — no PC, as in every Take-Two pipeline table before or since.

Asked why, Strauss Zelnick said: "We actually narrowed calendar 2025 to fall of 2025, and we feel really good about that release date," adding that "as development advances, our confidence in the title and its potential commercial impact continue to grow." Pressed for detail, he said Rockstar had given none.

The same release carried a $2.18 billion goodwill impairment and a loss per share of $17.02, and guided FY2025 net bookings to $5.55–5.65 billion — a fiscal year without Grand Theft Auto VI in it.

Fall 2025 was then reaffirmed twice more, in August and November 2024, and written into the FY2024 Form 10-K, an audited annual filing.

It did not hold. On May 2, 2025, Rockstar moved the game to May 26, 2026; that November it moved again, to November 19, 2026. The cumulative slip from this window is roughly eighteen months.

The lesson is worth keeping as the launch approaches: a date in an earnings release is a forecast made by a publisher, not a commitment by the studio building the game. Take-Two has been consistently honest about that distinction. Coverage of Take-Two usually has not.
