GTA 6: An Extended Look — What the Netflix Gameplay Premiere Showed

Published Covers GTA6DB Staff2 min read

Rockstar's first long-form gameplay showing premiered on Netflix on August 27. Netflix says it reached No. 1 in 87 of the 93 countries it tracks. Here is what it showed, and what Rockstar said around it.

For nearly three years the only official footage of Grand Theft Auto VI was two trailers. That changed on August 27, when Rockstar premiered Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look — roughly 27 minutes of in-game footage — on Netflix.

How it was released

Rockstar announced it on the Newswire on August 6: a Netflix premiere at 3 p.m. ET on August 27, followed by the Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the official site six hours later at 9 p.m. ET. A streaming service premiering a game's gameplay reveal was new, and Take-Two's chief executive Strauss Zelnick called Netflix a marketing and distribution partner on the company's August earnings call, without disclosing terms.

How many watched

Netflix said the Extended Look recorded 31.1 million views between August 27 and 30 and was the No. 1 title in 87 of the 93 countries it reports on. Separately, the analytics firm Stream Charts measured almost four million peak concurrent viewers across creators streaming reactions — a third-party figure, not Rockstar's.

What the footage showed

Two systems got most of the attention. The wanted level now runs to six stars, one more than GTA V. And parked cars are no longer free to take: Jason and Lucia break into them, with tougher vehicles needing tools. Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, used interviews that week to describe a “Criminal Profile” that tracks how needlessly violent you are — building on Red Dead Redemption 2's honour system rather than judging right or wrong. “There isn't a right or wrong way to play this game,” he told IGN.

What else Rockstar said that week

Nelson told the New York Times his own playthrough took about 80 hours, including optional goals with story consequences. He also told the Kinda Funny podcast the game launches with no real-money purchases and no generative AI.

The business picture

On the same earnings call, Take-Two said pre-orders had vastly exceeded internal forecasts, reaffirmed November 19, and declined to publish a number — Zelnick's point being that a pre-order can be cancelled. The $99.99 Ultimate Edition, he later told CNBC, is outselling the $79.99 Standard Edition.
