Dan Houser Left Rockstar in 2020 — GTA 6 Is the First Without Him
The writer of every mainline Grand Theft Auto since 1997 left the company two years, to the day, before Rockstar confirmed the next one was in development.
On February 4, 2020, Take-Two disclosed in an SEC filing that Dan Houser, Vice President of Creative at Rockstar Games, would leave the company on March 11 that year, after an extended break beginning in spring 2019.
Houser had written or co-written every mainline Grand Theft Auto since 1997. He shaped the voice of the series — the satire, the radio, the tonal register that distinguishes a GTA script from every game that has tried to imitate one. Grand Theft Auto VI is the first entry in the series developed without him.
Rockstar confirmed at the time that his brother Sam Houser's role as founder and president was unchanged. Sam Houser signed the November 2023 statement announcing the first GTA VI trailer, and is quoted in Take-Two's announcement press release.
The date carries an odd symmetry that is worth recording and not over-reading: Houser's departure was disclosed on February 4, 2020, and Rockstar confirmed that the next Grand Theft Auto was in active development on February 4, 2022 — exactly two years later, to the day.
What this means for the finished game is genuinely unknown. Rockstar has said nothing about how writing responsibilities were distributed on GTA VI, and no official credit list exists before launch. Anyone telling you confidently how Houser's absence has changed the game is speculating. What can be stated as fact is narrow and verifiable: he left, the filing says when, and this is the first one without him.
