Project Americas: Where the First GTA 6 Rumor Actually Came From

If you have read that GTA 6 was codenamed Project Americas, you have read a descendant of a single report published on March 6, 2018.

The YouTube channel The Know, then part of Rooster Teeth, published a piece by Brian Gaar citing an anonymous source described as close to Rockstar. The claims: an internal codename of Project Americas; a primary setting of a modern Vice City; missions taking the player to South and Central America, which is where the codename supposedly came from; a female protagonist; and a target window of roughly 2021 to 2022.

Some of that aged remarkably well. The setting was right. A female protagonist was right. The window was wrong by years, and the South America component has never appeared in any official material.

Here is the part that matters for anyone reading GTA 6 coverage: none of it was ever officially confirmed, and none of it has been since. Rockstar has never acknowledged the codename Project Americas. Every subsequent 'leak' invoking that name is either citing this 2018 video or citing something that cites it. An eight-year-old anonymous claim does not become fact through repetition.

Gaar has said publicly, years afterwards, that a Rockstar vice president phoned him after publication to ask who his source was, and told him he had not got everything right but had got a lot of it. That account is retrospective, the executive is unnamed, and Rockstar has never commented. It is interesting; it is not confirmation.
